At India's Tirupati temple, pilgrims have their heads shaved and offer the hair as the fulfilment of a vow. The temple authority's official guidance says the main Kalyanakatta has a large waiting hall and an organised queue system, with more than 1,316 barbers working around the clock in four shifts. Temple records reported 27,072 tonsures on 17 August 2018 alone.

What distinguishes this queue is the way an individual religious offering is supported as a mass service operation. The vow may be personal, but handling tens of thousands of hair offerings safely requires tokens, a waiting hall and shift work.
