In March 2021, people queued quietly outside Milan charity Pane Quotidiano for food parcels. Reuters reporting noted that the number of Italians in poverty had risen by one million during 2020 to 5.6 million; among those in line was a woman who had lost her cleaning work.

What distinguishes this queue is that it was not a temporary distribution created only by infection controls. It recorded a social shift in which people who had been working became regular users of food assistance. The line reflected lost livelihoods as much as scarce goods.
