In the autumn of 2025, displaced Palestinians queued at a charity kitchen in Gaza's Nuseirat refugee camp carrying empty pots. Reporting by Africanews with the Associated Press said that many in line were children and that, for some families, the kitchen supplied the only meal they could count on that day. On one Tuesday, the offering was simply rice ladled from a communal pot into each person's container.

This waiting cannot be reduced to an uplifting story of charity. Families had lost work and income, market prices were beyond their reach, and one father said there was no alternative to the kitchens. Humanitarian supplies entering Gaza remained far below the need. The line made the shortage visible household by household, through the empty vessels people brought with them.

In many food queues, attention rests on what is distributed. At Nuseirat, the containers are equally revealing. Each pot marked a household waiting beyond the serving point, connecting one communal cauldron to many interrupted domestic tables.
