At Kampala's Rolex Festival in August 2018, customers queued for the street food made by rolling eggs and vegetables inside chapati. An AFP report carried by New Vision explicitly describes customers waiting for their food while the music of politician Bobi Wine played nearby. Indian, Mexican and Kenyan chefs also offered their own versions.
The rolex had once been dismissed as a cheap food for poor customers, but the festival reframed it as a national dish now adopted by restaurants and hotels. What distinguishes this queue is that waiting to buy one snack became part of a public change in status. The customers in line were not merely seeking lunch; their demand helped move an everyday roadside food onto a celebratory national stage.
