At Tbilisi’s thirteenth-century Sioni Cathedral, worshippers kissed gilded icons inside while Orthodox priests queued outside for fresh tonis bread. The loaves were baked against the wall of a cylindrical oven in the seminary basement. The report gives no crowd size or waiting time. Its value lies in the arrangement it records: cathedral, seminary and underground bakery connected by an ordinary line of clergy waiting for bread. A sacred precinct also functioned as a neighbourhood food system.
