On 6 April 2023, customers queued outside Peixaria Araçá in Araçatuba, Brazil, and waited for their numbered tickets to be called. The next day was Good Friday, when observant Catholics traditionally abstain from meat, making Holy Week the fish shop’s busiest period of the year. O Liberal Regional reported that sales could rise by as much as 100 percent. The business added three temporary delivery workers, bringing its staff to eighteen, yet walk-in demand still produced a line for tilapia, hake, cod, shrimp and other seafood. The owner encouraged advance orders but used tickets to preserve order at the counter. Religious abstinence does more than remove meat from a meal: it concentrates demand for an alternative, reshaping staffing, delivery and the sequence of service. At this shop, a devotional calendar became visible as a number in a customer’s hand.
