In parts of Italy, St Joseph’s Day is marked by preparing and sharing food, though customs differ by place. To describe a queue for bread or a communal meal, an atlas needs to identify the town, organizer and year.

Food-sharing events can bring charity, faith and festivity together. It would be a mistake to assume that every recipient is poor, or that everyone offering food has the same motive. A photograph of a line cannot reveal every person’s circumstances.

Waiting for bread may resemble an ordinary transaction. Yet if a specific queue is documented, its meaning may come not from money changing hands but from what a community has chosen to celebrate and share.
