At the Venkateswara Temple in Tirumala, free-darshan pilgrims wait in compartments of the Vaikuntam Queue Complex. A Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams record says that in one year, pilgrims could not all be admitted on 156 of 365 days.
On the largest rollover day, about 20,000 people remained for the next day's darshan. Every compartment was full and roughly 5,000 people were still in the queue line. Administrators considered issuing cards with serial and compartment numbers, allowing pilgrims to move to overnight facilities while retaining priority the next morning.
The queue here became more than a corridor: it became an information system extending across a night. A number that preserved order while a pilgrim left the line separated waiting from the body and reconnected it to the following day's procession.
