In October 2022, dozens of people formed a pre-dawn line at a bakery near the junction of Bocanegra and Dominicos avenues in Callao, Peru. They wanted turrón, the sweet associated with the month of the Lord of Miracles. Customers arrived from about 5 a.m., expected to wait several hours and sometimes brought chairs. The wholesale price was 13 soles per piece, and one buyer said she took a dozen for family and friends.

The religious month famous for its purple-clad processions creates another kind of line at the bakery. People were not waiting to watch the devotion itself, but to carry October home in edible form. Resellers and households converged on the same low-priced supplier, turning a piece of turrón into an exchange between money and several hours before sunrise.
