On 17 October 2015, Myanmar nationals waited outside their country's embassy in Singapore to cast advance ballots in the general election. A Reuters photographic record says the queue formed before the polling stations opened and that hundreds had been waiting since 9 p.m. the previous night. Election day in Myanmar was 8 November, but for citizens living abroad, participation began with a long wait outside an embassy.
This queue was distinctive because the order of political participation appeared not at a domestic polling place but in the city where migrants lived. For the same election, voters in Yangon were also lining up at dawn. Ahead of a historic vote after more than half a century of military dominance, the domestic and overseas queues showed that the physical distance to a ballot was not the same for every voter.
