In April 1999, fans began lining up outside Los Angeles cinemas for Star Wars: Episode I—The Phantom Menace, due to open on 19 May. They brought chairs and sleeping gear, and some linked their hours in line to a charity fundraiser.

The film lasted only hours, but being among the first to see it became weeks of shared life on the pavement.
