Hameediyah in George Town, Penang, has served nasi kandar since 1907. When it was recognised in 2020 as Malaysia's oldest nasi kandar restaurant, a long roadside queue still waited for its murtabak and curries beside the ceremony. The word kandar refers to the pole and baskets once used to carry rice and curry for sale.
A dish named after a mobile selling method now produces a line outside a permanent shop six generations later. The business endures not because of a certificate alone, but because families return to a taste remembered from childhood. The queue carries 114 years of history forward one meal at a time.
