In June 2024, people in Malawi waited their turn during a national-ID mop-up registration campaign. The Nation reported from several registration centres and published an image captioned “People queue to get registered.” Shortages of forms and repeated equipment stoppages constrained the work; in some places officers could process about one hundred people a day or fewer.
The line mattered because a national ID connects residents not only to public services but also to voter registration. Malawi’s National Registration Bureau had begun nationwide outreach in June 2023 for first registrations and replacement cards. This was therefore more than a crowd: it was an ordered passage through scarce counters and equipment toward official proof of identity.
