In January 2024, long lines formed at Manila's Quirino Grandstand for Pahalik, when devotees touch or kiss the feet of the Black Nazarene image. Lengthy queues were still visible at 3 p.m., with thousands waiting their turn. Ushers repeatedly asked each person to touch the feet and cross briefly and move on.
Contact lasted only seconds, but the number of people sharing those seconds determined the line's length. Some older devotees chose Pahalik rather than joining the vast Traslacion procession. Religious proximity was managed not only as a crowd pressing toward an image, but as an ordered sequence of individual encounters.
