On 28 December 2022, jobseekers from across Sri Lanka travelled to the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment in Battaramulla. Local broadcaster News 1st reported a long physical queue leading to the building. The crowd had responded to a Facebook announcement about employment opportunities in Japan.
The available positions, however, numbered just twenty. They were sewing jobs involving car-seat products, offered to women, with a four-month residential Japanese-language training programme planned for those selected. The announcement brought people to the bureau, but the number of jobs was sharply limited.
This was not merely an administrative backlog or a digital waiting list. People physically lined up at a particular place in pursuit of the possibility of working abroad. The queue made that shared hope visible, without implying that everyone waiting would receive a job.
