On 16 February 2018, Venezuelans formed a line outside a migration office at Paraguachón on Colombia's northern border with Venezuela. A Reuters photograph records people waiting their turn in the border procedure, with the place and date identified.
A border appears thin on a map, but passage through it has the temporal thickness of counters, checks and documents. The image alone cannot establish every person's circumstances or exact waiting time. It does directly show movement being converted into an administrative order, one person at a time. Displacement from Venezuela became physically visible as a line outside Colombia's migration office.
